Shemagh, also known as a keffiyeh, is a traditional Arabic headgear - a square piece of cloth, mostly cotton, folded and wrapped differently around the head. For many different reasons, American and British soldiers during the war with Iraq and its subsequent occupation were often photographed and filmed with keffiyeh around their necks. Most often they were khaki in color and with a black pattern. The reasons for this may have been the attempts to win over the Arab inhabitants, as well as practical considerations. The most common are images of soldiers wearing kefije folded in a triangle and tied around their necks.
